iPhone 4S Battery Issue Caused By Setting Time Zone Feature

5

If you are one of the many people that have upgraded to the iPhone 4S, you may have been experiencing some issues with your battery. Since the release of the iPhone 4S, many users have been complaining and trying to look for a way to resolve the issue while others have contemplated switching back to an older iOS device until Apple resolves the issue. It appears that a fix has been found though, all you have to do is: turn your “Setting Time Zone” switch to OFF in the Settings > Location Services > System Services (at the bottom of the page).

What has been noticed by many is that when you switch this feature OFF, the standby time has gone up significantly. After testing this on an iPhone 4S, the new iPhone only lost 5% of its total battery life. The tip originally stems from Oliver Haslam, who noted that the bug likely lives inside iOS 5 and not necessarily within the iPhone 4S hardware. The “Setting Time Zone” ends up tracking constantly instead of periodically, causing the battery time to be severely cut down. According to Haslam, the folks over at iDownloadblog ran some tests as well and saw the same result:

We have tested this method on 4 different iPhone 4s handsets, including an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 3GS. All have reported drastically improved battery life after switching ‘Setting Time Zone’ off.

The only downside to switching the Setting Time Zone function off is the automatic resetting of your time if you end up crossing the barrier into a different time zone. Changing the setting is a small sacrifice to make for convenience in terms of battery life.

If you have tried it already, what has your experience been with it so far? If you haven’t give it a shot, come back, and let us know afterward!

MuscleNerd Shows Proof Of A Jailbreak For iPhone 4S

3

Popular iOS developer and hacker MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team has recently tweeted what many people have been waiting to see: Proof of an iPhone 4S jailbroken on iOS . His tweet did mention that this is a very early version of the jailbreak and it is far from a public release. Furthermore, no ETAs have been given as of right now so we will have to continue to be patient.

This does give us some hope though that the iPhone 4S jailbreak will probably be released sometime over the next few weeks. It has currently not been confirmed whether the method was a tethered or untethered jailbreak but I am sure for the many iPhone 4S users, having any form of a jailbreak beats having none at all. It is also possible that the same exploit might be usable on the iPad 2 (which also runs on the same A5 chip) but there has been no mention of that either.

Stay tuned for more information regarding the matter!

Update
MuscleNerd has tweeted again, this time with a video of the jailbreak working on the iPad 2. No mention of any specific ETA for release still. Video below:

Developers Working On Porting Siri To iPhone 4

0

One of the biggest features found in Apple’s newest iOS device, iPhone 4S is Siri. It is an iPhone 4S exclusive function and it allows users to ask questions to the voice command and receive responses back. It is also like your own personal secretary because alarms, adding events to your calendar and much more can be set up simply just by telling Siri to do so. In the mean time, Siri only works in English but Apple has promised more support with upcoming updates that include more languages and functions.

Siri is one of the biggest reasons many are lining up to purchase the iPhone 4S. Although the new iPhone was met with disappointing views at first, a short time after Apples “Let’s Talk iPhone” event, there was a lot of buzz around the new device and many ended up loving all the new features it had to offer. Many mentioned that they might not have purchased the iPhone 4S if Siri was made available on previous versions of the iPhone, such as the iPhone 4. And recent news has it, @iH8sn0w and @Gojohnnyboi were working on getting Siri to older A4 devices. But there is a downside to this- iPhone hackers have warned that getting Siri on iPhone 4 is impossible without copyright infringement. So if you plan to try the Siri port on your iPhone 4 upon its release, do so at your own risk.

The most recent update on Siri has it that the current port is working much faster and is running much smoother on the iPhone 4. However, it does lack sound and Apple server connectivity which is a key feature found in Siri. @joshmtucker and @jackoplane have worked together and released a Siri port FAQ to help answer a variety of questions regarding the whole ordeal. @joshmtucker has even went as far as releasing a video showcasing the performance of the port as of right now. This video can be found below:

The biggest question being asked is how long the Siri port will take to be released. Your answer according to the FAQ: Weeks! Stay tuned for more up to date information regarding the topic!

RedSn0w 0.9.9b6 Released – iPhone 3GS Location Service Issue Fixed

0

The popular iPhone Dev Team jailbreak tool, Redsn0w has been updated. The newest version doesn’t release any new features but there are some important mentions for for those of you running a tethered jailbreak on iOS 5. Currently, the new version supports both Mac and Windows. You can download the respective versions below:

For those of you who are wondering what’s  new, here is what the iPhone Dev Team had to say regarding version 0.9.9b6 on their blog:

Update #14: We’ve released version 0.9.9b6 of redsn0w, with both a functional fix and cosmetic fix for iOS5 jailbreakers. For iPhone3GS owners with the 06.15 baseband, this redsn0w eliminates the network crash you saw when using Location Services in iOS5 (in fact, you don’t even need to disable Location Services anymore during the initial setup). The cosmetic fix is to the visual countdown you see when going into DFU mode.

It’s okay to re-run this redsn0w over an existing device jailbroken at iOS5. Just choose “Jailbreak” again and de-select Cydia (in other words, all the checkboxes will be unchecked). If you are lucky enough to have an old-bootrom iPhone3GS, please pre-select the IPSW first (redsn0w can’t yet auto-detect the FW version of your old-bootrom 3GS if it’s already been jailbroken).

There are basically two fixes. One of an aesthetic fix and the other is a functionality fix. Previously any countdowns that were a part of RedSn0w (every time you have to enter DFU mode) were not correct, the timer was too slow – this issue has been fixed.

The functionality update has to do specifically with iPhone 3GS users who are jailbreak with RedSn0w 0.9.9b4 – b5 with the 06.15 baseband (the iPad baseband). When using location services in iOS 5 with the 06.15 baseband, some users were reported a network crash. The Dev Team is apologetic and has rolled out this new update to help fix the problem. You can simply plug in your iPhone 3GS and rejailbreak it with this version of RedSn0w right over the jailbreak that you already have. (Don’t worry, you won’t lose anything).  Remember, the old-bootrom iPhone 3GS will still have an untethered jailbreak on iOS 5. Be aware that if you do have the old bootrom, RedSn0w can’t auto-detect that, and you will need to specify it manually.

For those of you waiting for the untethered jailbreak, it should be coming in the near future so just be patient. If you have any questions regarding RedSn0w 0.9.9b6, let us know in the comments below!
