iOS Developer pod2g Finds Bug To Untether iOS 5

2

Are you an iOS 5 user and have been waiting dreadfully for an untethered jailbreak for your iDevice? Well there’s good news for you- @pod2g, iPhone hacker of the ex-Chronic Dev Team announced that a bug has been discovered in iOS 5 and could help towards an untethered jailbreak.

@pod2g tweeted officially on November 7th:

Hey jailbreaking friends, I’ve found a bug that can untether iOS 5. Don’t expect a release soon, but I’m gonna work hard in it.

It is unclear whether the untethered jailbreak will work on the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S or if the bug exists in iOS 5.0.1 beta either. But as of right now, Redsn0w and Sn0wbreeze released by iPhone Dev Team and iH8sn0w have tethered jailbreaks for iOS 5.0 and iOS 5.0.1 betas only. BigBoss also released a SemiTether jailbreak (which has limitations) that lets users reboot their jailbroken devices without connecting it to a computer. With all these tethered and semi-tethered jailbreaks, STILL nothing beats a fully untethered one that everyone is anticipating for.

When will the untethered jailbreak be released? @pod2g has not provided an ETA, but it will hopefully be released after iOS 5.0.1 is released.

The Camera App’s Hidden Panorama Mode Feature Revealed

0

It has been known for quite some time that Apple has been working on bringing the panorama camera mode to the iPhone. Recently, iOS developer/jailbreaker Conrad Kramer (@conradev) figured out how to enable the panorama mode within the original Camera app. Popular iOS developer, Grant Paul (@chpwn) has packaged the feature in a jailbreak tweak called “Firebreak” which is available on Cydia right now.

As of right now, the interface for the panorama feature is simplistic and not very appealing, but it gets the job done. To use the feature, you simply turn the panorama mode on by clicking the panorama button in the camera options menu, then move the iPhone in the air as shown in the on-screen diagram (seen in the first picture).

The final product will show you a picture with a panoramic view, as seen below:

How many of you are excited for the feature? Do you plan to get the jailbreak tweak “Firebreak” ?

Get Notified Of Your Sent Texts With SMSConfirmation

0

SMSConfirmation, a new tweak developed by author william_vab was released recently for iOS 5 users. Ever send a text message when there was no service and didn’t realize it failed to send, then open up “messages” a few hours later and see that it was never sent? This new tweak allows you to receive notifications everytime your text messages have been sent out.

This tweak can be very useful, but there is a downside to it- you will receive a notification for everytime your text has been sent- this can get extremely annoying after just a few messages. SMSConfirmation doesn’t have an on/off option where you can choose to receive the notifications or not. The only way for you to disable receiving them is if you uninstall the tweak entirely from Cydia. This is something you have to consider before downloading the tweak- but even with the downside, it can be very useful if you are someone who sends messages without checking if it’s actually been sent or not.

If you decide you are someone who will benefit from this feature, it can be downloaded right from Cydia, free of charge.

iOS Security Exploit Discovered – Allows Access To Users’ Information

3

Charlie Miller, a well-known Mac hacker and researcher has reportedly found a way to sneak malware into the App Store and subsequently onto any iOS device through the use of exploiting a flaw in Apple’s restrictions on code signing. According to Forbes, the restrictions allow the malware to steal user data and take control of certain iOS functions.

Miller explained that the code signing restrictions allow only Apple’s approved commands to run in an iOS device’s memory and apps that violate these rules aren’t allowed in the App Store. He found a way to bypass Apple’s security check by exploiting a bug in iOS code signing, one which allows an app to download new and unapproved commands from a remote computer. The malware can then be used to read user’s contacts, make the phone vibrate or sound a ringtone, steal user’s photos, and more whenever the developer chooses. According to Miller:

Now you could have a program in the App Store like Angry Birds that can run new code on your phone that Apple never had a chance to check. With this bug, you can’t be assured of anything you download from the App Store behaving nicely.

The flaw first surfaced with the release of iOS 4.3, which increased browser speed by allowing javascript code from the internet to run on a much deeper level in a device’s memory than in previous iterations of the iOS platform. Miller was able to realize that the increased speed forced Apple to create an exception for the browse to run unapproved code, and the researcher soon was able to find a bug which allowed him to expand the code beyond the browser to any app downloaded from the App Store.

To showcase the exploit he found, Miller created an app called “Instastock,” which he submitted and Apple approved. The app appears to be a simple stock ticker but it can leverage the code signing bug and communicate with Miller’s server to pull unauthorized commands onto the affected device. From there the program has the ability to send back user data including address book contacts, photos, and other files. The app has been pulled from the App Store and according to a recent tweet of his, Miller has been banned from the Apple Store and kicked out of the iOS Developer program as well.

To provide more info on the exploit, Miller will be giving a talk at the SysCan conference in Taiwan next week. He won’t be public revealing the exploit though giving Apple time to fix the issue at hand. He does do a good job of showing it off in a video, which can be found below:

For those of you who don’t already know, Charlie Miller isn’t a novice when it comes to iOS or Mac security. In 2008, Miller broke into the MacBook Air in two minutes through Safari amongst many other feats.

What do you think of the whole ordeal? Do you think Apple made a smart move in banning him? Share any thoughts below!

Save Pages For Offline Viewing With WebOffline

Ever get stuck unable to go to the next page on Safari because your device lost connection and you have no service? If it’s happened to you at least once,  WebOffline is the perfect jailbreak tweak for you- it lets you save entire web pages on Safari for offline viewing. Limited Data Plan Users Need To Be Careful When Using Siri

0

Many iPhone 4S users have found Siri, the personal assistant to be very useful. But, its important to note that if you have a low-level data plan (like AT&T’s 200MB/month) you should be careful. The folks over at Ars Technica ran some tests and found that if you use it 10-15 times a day, you are going to use 27 MB a month. Many people who use Siri though, tend to use it more then 10-15 times a day, which may end up using a good chunk of data.

The number of queries you use, will obviously be dependent on your phone usage. If you don’t use it at all, there will be basically none, but other days if you end up doing a bunch of things, the issue may become apparent. The problem arises from the fact that Siri sends data out for every query, because the whole processing happens remotely instead on just the phone.

Although 27MB a month (on average) doesn’t seem like much, it can quickly add up if you use Siri more then that and depending on your other data usage you might end up accumulating quite a bit of data usage. If you are already bumping against your cap and you are a frequent Siri user, it is something that you should definitely be keeping in mind.

With all of the problems iPhone 4S users are facing, such as the audio issues, the battery draining issues, and the Siri outages this is probably one of the last thing some iPhone 4S users want to hear. Will you have to watch your data plans a bit better?
