Jailbreakers Warned To Avoid Upgrading To iOS 5.0.1 By pod2g
1We recently reported that ex-Chronic Dev Team member pod2g tweeted out that he found an untether bug for iOS 5. Other than the information given previously, it is unknown on how far he’s gotten as well as when we can expect public release. Although he’s remained MIA for the last couple of months or so, he seems to be actively keeping us updated on what’s in store. Eight hours ago, he tweeted out a warning to those who want to update to iOS 5.0.1 upon release.
According to his tweet, iOS 5.0.1 will close an iOS security bug found by Charlie Miller that makes exploits dramatically easier to tackle. This would imply that a jailbreak for iOS 5.0 versus iOS 5.0.1 could come quicker. Pod2g clarified in a later tweet that it wasn’t a matter of iOS 5.0.1 never being jailbreakable, it will just be more difficult and will take longer.
So for us end users, what should we do? Below is the grant scheme of things:
iOS 5.0 Users
Remain on this firmware and do not update to iOS 5.0.1. After iOS 5.0.1 releases, Apple will close the signing window for this firmware and won’t allow downgrades. With SHSH not being an option anymore, you may have to wait longer for a jailbreak if you’re on iOS 5.0.1.
iOS 5.0.1 Beta Users
Downgrade back to iOS 5.0. As the above, the signing window will be closed when iOS 5.0.1 is publicly released, leaving you no choice but to update up, not downgrade.
iOS 4 Users
Hang tight. Many of you are most likely on iOS 4 still due to unlocks and baseband issues. Breaking those just to update iOS 5 would be unwise. Information as it comes will be posted to give better clarification in this regard. However, if unlocks and basebands are not an issue for you and you’re able to update to iOS 5, I strongly would. Just as the above, the signing window will close when iOS 5.0.1 releases.
Ultimately, it is your decision whether to take action on what has been stated. However I would take in consideration all the factors on the table and base your decision upon your own personal situation. Stay tuned for more information as it surfaces!

Sn0wbreeze 2.8b10 Released – Jailbreaks iOS 5.0.1 Beta 2
0Apple recently released iOS 5.0.1 beta 2 to developers via an over-the-air update or the Apple Developer iOS Dev Center. You can use the current version of redsn0w 0.9.9b8 to jailbreak this beta as long as you point to the previous 5.0.1 IPSW file. Chances are the iPhone Dev-Team will update redsn0w to alleviate the need to point to the old IPSW file, however no new version of redsn0w has been released yet. Nonetheless, sn0wbreeze has been updated to do so.
iH8sn0w recently tweeted that he has updated sn0wbreeze to support iOS 5.0.1 beta 2.
He provided a changelog which can be read below:

The key points here are the following:
- All iOS 5 devices are still tethered while jailbroken with the exception of the iPhone 3GS old bootrom
- For iPhone 3GS iPad baseband users (06.15.00), make sure to re-flash the iPad baseband via sn0wbreeze if you restore(d) to a stock 5.0 firmware.
- There is no jailbreak for the iPad 2 or iPhone 4S on iOS 5 at this time.

Note: If you’re currently on iOS 5.0.1 beta 1, jailbroken, and want to update via over-the-air, you must restore to a stock firmware first. It will not work if you try to update over-the-air while jailbroken.
Semi-Tether by BigBoss is confirmed to work on this firmware.

Audio Issues Plague iPhone 4S Users
2The battery woes and random Siri outages aren’t the only issues that iPhone 4S users seem to be experiencing. Over the course of this past week, there has been a growing number of complaints in Apple’s support forums regarding problems with echoes on the iPhone 4S when used with a headset, all of which typically end up degrading over the duration with the conversation.
One of the many threads on the issue has reached 17 pages of posts with a number of users reporting the same issue on a variety of different phone models and carriers. Here is what one of the thread users had to say:
When using the Apple hands free headset with the phone during a call, I get an echo problem. It does not occur immediately. It can very from 30 seconds into a call and as far up to 9 mins in before it begins the annoying echo. If I unplug the headset it goes away but will return when I plug the headset back in. I have tried 3 brand new iphone 4s headsets with the same problems. So far I have tried rebooting, and also restored phone back to factory original settings as a new phone and still no resolution. I have been told by the other person on the line a screech sound is made then the echo begins.
Many users have had success fixing this issue by toggling the speakerphone option on and off when the echo begins. I have had first had experience with this method and it has worked for me in the past. Sometimes the echo comes back periodically at which point, I repeat the procedure to resolve it again. It is quite tedious sometimes but it beats the whole process of hanging up and re-calling.
There also seems to be another issue regarding static on iPhone 4S calls which are being document in a separate thread on the Apple support forums. The issue seems to be affecting both incoming and outgoing calls. Some users have even reported the issue occurring on multiple handsets as they have exchanged devices at the Apple retail stores in an attempt to address the problem.
If this wasn’t enough already, there seems to be a third audio related issue being tracked in a lengthy 27 page thread involving users experiencing no audio on a subset of outgoing phone calls. Below is a post from the thread describing a users’ experience with the issue:
Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S – 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing. Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.
Similar to the temporary method of resolving the echo issue, some users reported that toggling the speakerphone option may fix the lack of audio on a given call, while others have claimed that this technique doesn’t always work. As of right now, Apple support staff has been unable or unwilling to specifically diagnose the issue as either a hardware or software problem. Furthermore, users who have tested the iOS 5.0.1 beta 1 and beta 2 have mentioned that the beta firmware does not fix the issue.
Have you experienced any audio related issues? If so, did toggling the speakerphone option work for you? Share any experiences and thoughts below!
Apple Releases iOS 5.0.1 Beta 2 To Developers
1Apple seeded iOS 5.0.1 beta 2 to developers today. This update came roughly two days after the first iOS 5.0.1 beta.
If you are signed-up developer you’ll be getting this update over the air. Or, you could head on over to the iOS Developer Center and download it without waiting. This version is identified by codename 9A404, while yesterdays release was 9A402, and more than likely the changes between the two are rather tiny.
The fixes, which include those introduced in iOS 5.0.1 beta 1, are:
- Fixes bugs affecting battery life
- Adds Multitasking Gestures for original iPad
- Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
- Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation
- Contains security improvements
There is also a new way for developers to specify cache files that should remain on the device, fixing problems that saw users’ Instapaper libraries being wiped due to lack of space. A new attribute allows developers to specify files that should not be deleted, even in cases of low storage space.
Interestingly, the OTA update size on the iPad 2 seems to be 45.8MB, while the iPhone 4S update downloads the entire image at 800MB. This is counter to the behavior that we saw with OTA updates during the beta of iOS 5, where these updates were in delta-sized bites of 100-150MB or so. This would indicate that there were enough changes to the iPhone 4S firmware for Apple to warrant pushing the whole image, not just the changes, out over the air.

Sn0wbreeze 2.8b9 Released To Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 Beta
0As we reported previously, the Dev-Team rolled out the updated redsn0w 0.9.9b8 which adds support for iOS 5.0.1 Beta. Apple’s iOS 5.0.1 Beta was released fixing numerous security bugs and the iPhone 4S battery problem in iOS 5. Redsn0w 0.9.9b8 is available for both Windows and Mac users and can be used to deliver a tethered jailbreak to the user. iOS 5 currently has a Semi-tether available compliments of BigBoss which is currently compatible with iOS 5.0.1 Beta; it has been confirmed.
We’re happy to report that Windows users can choose to use more than redsn0w 0.9.9b8 to jailbreak their iOS 5/iOS 5.0.1 Beta devices today. A while ago, iH8sn0w tweeted that he had released sn0wbreeze 2.8b9. Sn0wbreeze is an alternative to Redsn0w in that it offers an easy-to-use GUI. Much of it is eye-candy and someone who is new to the jailbreak scene might prefer sn0wbreeze over redsn0w because of the graphical interface versus plain text. In my opinion, sn0wbreeze’s graphical interface and animations make it easier to understand what is going on when you read the directions, where redsn0w doesn’t have anything to show you what to do; it just hands you directions.
Sn0wbreeze isn’t available for Mac. Windows users can download sn0wbreeze 2.8b9 below. Simply unzip the file that you download to find the sn0wbreeze.exe file. Furthermore, you can download older versions of sn0wbreeze here if you need to.

iH8sn0w included a Pastie which can be read here of the changes in this new version of sn0wbreeze.

Redsn0w 0.9.9b8 Released – Jailbreaks iOS 5.0.1 Beta
3Apple recently pushed out the iOS 5.0.1 Beta to developers which has fixed numerous bugs in iOS 5 and brings the beloved multitasking gestures back to the original iPad. It was reported that iOS 5.0.1 could have been jailbroken with redsn0w 0.9.9b7, although you would need to point redsn0w to the iOS 5.0 firmware file, and the jailbreak was tethered.

Because the IPSW isn’t public, you’ll still need to provide it once to redsn0w (at which point it will cache all the important pieces so you don’t need to select it again).
For those iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 users who preserve their baseband, the Mac version can also produce the NO_BB_* custom IPSW’s for 5.0.1. (But please note that ultrasn0w doesn’t get updated for betas like this.)
This is still a tethered jailbreak for all except old-bootrom 3GS users.
This new update brings support for the iOS 5.0.1 Beta. Now if you have the iOS 5.0.1 Beta firmware on your computer, you can use redsn0w 0.9.9b8 and point redsn0w to your iOS 5.0.1 Beta firmware. The jailbreak method is the same for the iOS 5 jailbreak using redsn0w 0.9.9b7 and the jailbreak is still tethered as of this point. If a tethered jailbreak does not suit you well, then you have the option to install the Semi-Tether which allows you to boot up your iPhone into a non-jailbroken state after rebooting; you will be able to boot tethered later on to get your jailbreak data back up and running. Or, if you’re more patient, you can keep waiting for the untethered jailbreak that i0n1c confirmed was being worked on.
iPhone 3GS users can still have the untethered jailbreak if they have the old bootrom, and Mac users can still make their special baseband custom ISPW files using this redsn0w for iOS 5.0.1. The Dev-Team also warns that ultrasn0w will not be updated for the beta, so it’s recommended that you wait until the official iOS 5.0.1 release to the public.

iOS 5.0.1 Beta Seeded – Can Be Jailbroken Via RedSn0w (Confirmed)
2Earlier today Apple seeded iOS 5.0.1 beta to developers. This update on the iOS firmware is said to fix a few bugs and enhance performance. Amongst the issues the update addresses are the iPhone 4S battery issues, the iPad 2 smart cover security flaw, and multitasking gestures for the original iPad.
If you happen to be a jailbreaker who couldn’t resist the urge of updating to the new beta firmware, we have some good news for you. MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team has recently tweeted that the latest version of RedSn0w (RedSN0w 0.9.9 beta 7) can jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 beta. All you need to do is to point the RedSn0w 0.9.9 b7 to the iOS 5 IPSW (not the iOS 5.0.1 beta IPSW). We assume that the iPhone Dev team will update RedSn0w as soon as or possibly even before iOS 5.0.1 beta is released to the public.
As usual, this is a tethered jailbreak which means that you will need to connect your iOS device to your computer and use the “Just Boot” option in RedSn0w to restart your iPhone. Following the convention of the previous jailbreaks, the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2 are not compatible . The semi-tether is also available although as of right now, unconfirmed.
Stay tuned for more info!
