Limited Data Plan Users Need To Be Careful When Using Siri
0Many iPhone 4S users have found Siri, the personal assistant to be very useful. But, its important to note that if you have a low-level data plan (like AT&T’s 200MB/month) you should be careful. The folks over at Ars Technica ran some tests and found that if you use it 10-15 times a day, you are going to use 27 MB a month. Many people who use Siri though, tend to use it more then 10-15 times a day, which may end up using a good chunk of data.
The number of queries you use, will obviously be dependent on your phone usage. If you don’t use it at all, there will be basically none, but other days if you end up doing a bunch of things, the issue may become apparent. The problem arises from the fact that Siri sends data out for every query, because the whole processing happens remotely instead on just the phone.
Although 27MB a month (on average) doesn’t seem like much, it can quickly add up if you use Siri more then that and depending on your other data usage you might end up accumulating quite a bit of data usage. If you are already bumping against your cap and you are a frequent Siri user, it is something that you should definitely be keeping in mind.
With all of the problems iPhone 4S users are facing, such as the audio issues, the battery draining issues, and the Siri outages this is probably one of the last thing some iPhone 4S users want to hear. Will you have to watch your data plans a bit better?

Sn0wbreeze 2.8b10 Released – Jailbreaks iOS 5.0.1 Beta 2
0Apple recently released iOS 5.0.1 beta 2 to developers via an over-the-air update or the Apple Developer iOS Dev Center. You can use the current version of redsn0w 0.9.9b8 to jailbreak this beta as long as you point to the previous 5.0.1 IPSW file. Chances are the iPhone Dev-Team will update redsn0w to alleviate the need to point to the old IPSW file, however no new version of redsn0w has been released yet. Nonetheless, sn0wbreeze has been updated to do so.
iH8sn0w recently tweeted that he has updated sn0wbreeze to support iOS 5.0.1 beta 2.
He provided a changelog which can be read below:

The key points here are the following:
- All iOS 5 devices are still tethered while jailbroken with the exception of the iPhone 3GS old bootrom
- For iPhone 3GS iPad baseband users (06.15.00), make sure to re-flash the iPad baseband via sn0wbreeze if you restore(d) to a stock 5.0 firmware.
- There is no jailbreak for the iPad 2 or iPhone 4S on iOS 5 at this time.
Download Sn0wbreeze 2.8 b10
Note: If you’re currently on iOS 5.0.1 beta 1, jailbroken, and want to update via over-the-air, you must restore to a stock firmware first. It will not work if you try to update over-the-air while jailbroken.
Semi-Tether by BigBoss is confirmed to work on this firmware.

Audio Issues Plague iPhone 4S Users
2The battery woes and random Siri outages aren’t the only issues that iPhone 4S users seem to be experiencing. Over the course of this past week, there has been a growing number of complaints in Apple’s support forums regarding problems with echoes on the iPhone 4S when used with a headset, all of which typically end up degrading over the duration with the conversation.
One of the many threads on the issue has reached 17 pages of posts with a number of users reporting the same issue on a variety of different phone models and carriers. Here is what one of the thread users had to say:
When using the Apple hands free headset with the phone during a call, I get an echo problem. It does not occur immediately. It can very from 30 seconds into a call and as far up to 9 mins in before it begins the annoying echo. If I unplug the headset it goes away but will return when I plug the headset back in. I have tried 3 brand new iphone 4s headsets with the same problems. So far I have tried rebooting, and also restored phone back to factory original settings as a new phone and still no resolution. I have been told by the other person on the line a screech sound is made then the echo begins.
Many users have had success fixing this issue by toggling the speakerphone option on and off when the echo begins. I have had first had experience with this method and it has worked for me in the past. Sometimes the echo comes back periodically at which point, I repeat the procedure to resolve it again. It is quite tedious sometimes but it beats the whole process of hanging up and re-calling.
There also seems to be another issue regarding static on iPhone 4S calls which are being document in a separate thread on the Apple support forums. The issue seems to be affecting both incoming and outgoing calls. Some users have even reported the issue occurring on multiple handsets as they have exchanged devices at the Apple retail stores in an attempt to address the problem.
If this wasn’t enough already, there seems to be a third audio related issue being tracked in a lengthy 27 page thread involving users experiencing no audio on a subset of outgoing phone calls. Below is a post from the thread describing a users’ experience with the issue:
Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S – 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing. Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.
Similar to the temporary method of resolving the echo issue, some users reported that toggling the speakerphone option may fix the lack of audio on a given call, while others have claimed that this technique doesn’t always work. As of right now, Apple support staff has been unable or unwilling to specifically diagnose the issue as either a hardware or software problem. Furthermore, users who have tested the iOS 5.0.1 beta 1 and beta 2 have mentioned that the beta firmware does not fix the issue.
Have you experienced any audio related issues? If so, did toggling the speakerphone option work for you? Share any experiences and thoughts below!
The Recently Fixed Siri Outage Leaves iPhone 4S Users Annoyed
3Although Apple’s new Siri personal assistant for the iPhone 4S experienced a few issues in availability shortly after the device’s launch last month, the recent hiccup Siri went through seems to be the worst yet. A new widespread outage appeared to be the cause of many user complaints recently. Siri problems were abundant with only intermittent service available throughout the course of the issue and users were constantly being faced with errors messages in which Siri reported being unable to connect to the network.
The Siri service is currently labeled as being in beta according to Apple – and they seem to be working actively to refine the technology and infrastructure behind the feature. Apple continues to roll out the iPhone 4S, with 30 countries already under the belt, and another 15 to come online next week. It is reported that Siri currently offers support in English (U.S., U.K., and Australia) but Apple plans to release an update to support multiple languages early next year.
The service has been reported as actively running at this point but it has left many feeling a bit frustrated. Siri outages aren’t the only issues iPhone 4S owners are having to deal with, as many have been constantly complaining about battery draining issues as well (which isn’t exclusive to the iPhone 4S either).
Were you one of the many who experienced issues with Siri previously? For you iPhone 4S owners out there – are you content with your purchase or are you constantly struggling with the issues that continue to arise? Let us know below!

Apple Releases iOS 5.0.1 Beta 2 To Developers
1Apple seeded iOS 5.0.1 beta 2 to developers today. This update came roughly two days after the first iOS 5.0.1 beta.
If you are signed-up developer you’ll be getting this update over the air. Or, you could head on over to the iOS Developer Center and download it without waiting. This version is identified by codename 9A404, while yesterdays release was 9A402, and more than likely the changes between the two are rather tiny.
The fixes, which include those introduced in iOS 5.0.1 beta 1, are:
- Fixes bugs affecting battery life
- Adds Multitasking Gestures for original iPad
- Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
- Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation
- Contains security improvements
There is also a new way for developers to specify cache files that should remain on the device, fixing problems that saw users’ Instapaper libraries being wiped due to lack of space. A new attribute allows developers to specify files that should not be deleted, even in cases of low storage space.
Interestingly, the OTA update size on the iPad 2 seems to be 45.8MB, while the iPhone 4S update downloads the entire image at 800MB. This is counter to the behavior that we saw with OTA updates during the beta of iOS 5, where these updates were in delta-sized bites of 100-150MB or so. This would indicate that there were enough changes to the iPhone 4S firmware for Apple to warrant pushing the whole image, not just the changes, out over the air.

Control Siri/Voice Control Without Using Your Hands With HandsFreeControl
0A new Cydia tweak called Hands-Free Control was released by Brock Haymond and what exactly makes this tweak awesome? We have all the details and you’ll be thanking us once it’s installed onto your device! First on the list is how Hands-Free Control lets you activate Siri or voice control without having to hold down the home button for a couple of seconds upon asking for a request.
When the tweak is installed on your phone, by simply saying “Siri,” voice control or Siri will be activated. As of now, this tweak is only compatible with iPhones 3GS/4 and iPods 3G and 4G because there is no jailbreak for the iPhone 4s just yet. But Hands-Free Control developer, Brock Haymond stated that once the iPhone 4S can be jailbroken, this feature will automatically work because voice control and Siri have similar resources.
Settings can be configured on your device ranging from easiness to activate this feature to controlling vibrations and system sounds. A few concerns about this tweak is how easily it will pick up background noises/words and take them as commands- you don’t have to worry because in the settings configuration, strictness and looseness of the verification system can be controlled. Setting it to “loose” means that it’s easy to accidentally activate voice control or Siri. But if the setting is on “strict,” then your device will be more picky with the words you use to activate it. The feature on Hands-Free Control can be adjusted according to when you would like to use it- therefore it won’t be a program that will continuously run if you didn’t want it to. A downside to this tweak though is whenever it is enabled, you will definitely see a drop in battery percentage because you are straining your device- since it will be listening in the background for your voice and commands. But the good thing about it is that you can enable and disable it whenever you’d like as mentioned above.
Hands-Free Control can be downloaded on Cydia from the BigBoss repo for $1.99 (I would buy it now if you’d like to try it out- the price will increase later on). DO NOTE that this does NOT install “Siri” on your device- it is simply used FOR users who have Siri pre-installed (and now iPhone 4 users who install it) and for voice control. Therefore, if you already HAVE Siri- it’ll work, but if you DO NOT, then it’ll work for voice control.
