Rumors Suggest iPhone 5 TBA and Available In August With Hefty Upgrades
0
The folks over at BGR are claiming that Apple will be announcing a much improved and updated iPhone 5 sometime in August. They mentioned the following in their article:
We have been told by a reliable source to expect a radical new case design for the upcoming iPhone, though we have not been given any additional details surrounding the design of the new iPhone case.
Many recent rumors have been pointed to Apple releasing a small upgrade from the current iPhone 4, some of which mentioned the new iPhone to be dubbed the iPhone 4S (similar to the 3G – 3GS upgrade in the past). We have seen rumors from both ends of the spectrum with This Is My Next claiming that it will be a small upgrade to BGR claiming it will be a large upgrade. Speculation has been swinging both ways as different people believe different sources for different reasons but no one is sure as of right now.
BGR also mentioned the possibility of Apple holding the iPhone 5 announcement at the beginning or middle of August with availability to follow as early as the end of August. The folks over at TiPb have also heard similar August buzz from big retail sources, but all of the sources provide hit and miss info. The major issue with an August time frame is obviously Apple’s announcement of a fall release of iOS 5. Apple is unlikely to release a new iPhone prior to the release of iOS 5 and to further prove this point, every new iPhone to date has shipped with a new version of iOS, a trend that is likely to continue.

iOS 5b1 Expected To Expire On August 4th
0If you are running the iOS 5 beta 1 build on any of your iOS devices, than the following news will probably be important to you. The same goes for people using the firmware that don’t have an Apple developer’s account. The jailbreak developer, iH8Sn0w via a tweet warned everyone that the iOS 5b1 has an expiration date. Once expired, the firmware will lock you out of your device until its downgraded or until iOS 5 is officially launched. He mentioned the following in his tweet:
To those wondering, iOS 5 (BETA 1!) will expire on August 4, 2011.
The iOS 5 beta 1, which was released last week will be deactivated on August 4th according to iH8sn0w. The process is one that can’t be stopped either because it is one that occurs at boot level and as you already probably know, there is currently no boot-level exploit for iOS 5.
So what does that mean for you? If you were smart and saved your SHSH blobs from your previous firmware than you can downgrade at any time you wish to. On the other hand, registered Apple developers also don’t have much to worrya bout as it is extremely likely that the next beta will have been out for weeks by the time the first beta version shuts down. You will probably be able to upgrade to the new firmware as usual. It is likely that for users who didn’t save their blobs, as with the first beta release, there is a good chance that the new software will be made available somewhere on the web at some point, although we don’t condone using pirated Apple software.
The bottom line, when iOS 5b2 is released, make sure you either:
- Update to iOS 5b2
- Downgrade back to 4.3.3
Any device that is running the original beta after August 4th is likely to be locked down until a newer firmware is available. There is plenty of time though, just don’t get stuck!
[Video] iOS 5 iPad AirPlay Mirroring Walk-Through
0One of the features we discussed in our previous article (Apple Announces iOS 5 – Feature Highlights) was AirPlay Mirroring for the iPad. This feature gives the ipad 2 the ability to wirelessly mirror all video on the screen of the device to an Apple TV 2G. Mirroring is no longer enabled in just a few apps here and there, now anything on your iPad 2 can be shown on the big screen with a few taps. The folks over at Apple’n'Apps have created a very thorough ten-minute video walk-through of several iOS apps wirelessly connected to a big screen HDTV from an iPad 2. One of the biggest things the video shows, is how smooth AirPlay Mirroring really is. Furthermore, the lack of cables makes it all that much better for game play as you can shake, rattle, and roll your iPad 2 without worrying about any wires.
The video walk-through can be seen below:
First Set of Third Party Widgets Released For iOS 5
0With iOS 5 having the ability to utilize widgets, there has been lots of buzz as to whether developers will be able to create custom widgets and market them for the iOS software. Whether or not Apple is restricting this capability from the stock iOS, the jailbreak community has already managed to step it up a notch. The first widget for Notifications Center, known as UISettings, is currently in alpha form and on Cydia via an alternate repo.
