iH8Sn0w has released Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2 to jailbreak iOS 5.1 tethered on iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod Touch 4G, 3G and iPad 1. Sn0wbreeze supports non-A5 devices on iOS 5.1 which are exploitable to GeoHot’s Limera1n exploit. You can download Sn0wbreeze for Windows from the links below.

NOTE:

  • Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2 jailbreak for iOS 5.1 supports iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod Touch 4G, 3G and iPad 1.
  • No A5-devices support (iPhone 4S, iPad 2)
  • If you are lucky enough to have an iPhone 3GS old bootrom, Snowbreeze 2.9.2 will jailbreak iOS 5.1 untethered for you.
  • Sn0wbreeze 2.9.2 also fixes iPad baseband and iPhone 2G. It also brings back the iPhone Dev-Team’s iPhone 2G permanent unlock ‘BootNeuter’.

Why is there no A5 support? :~(

A low level (DFU/iBoot/LLB) exploit is required to start the restoration of custom IPSWs. The past two jailbreaks (JailbreakMe & absinthe) for the A5 worked within iOS itself. These exploits are not capable of bringing the iDevice into a state where it will accept custom IPSWs. Therefore, an A5 device cannot currently downgrade to an iOS revision that Apple is no longer signing (even with SHSH blobs) and it cannot preserve the baseband when updating to a newer iOS revision.

While the future may always seem to get more narrower… Keep your head high and continue to be open minded.

iPhone Dev-team has released RedSn0w 0.9.6b10 which brings tethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1 firmware. RedSn0w0.9.10b6 supports non-A5 devices on iOS 5.1 which are exploitable to GeoHot’s Limera1n exploit. You can download RedSn0w 0.9.10b6 for Mac and Windows from the links below.

Note:

It’s a tethered jailbreak which requires you to connect your device to your computer, every time you reboot your device, and use “Just Boot” feature in RedSn0w to boot in into jailbreak mode. If you turn on the device without using “Just Boot” feature, jailbreak apps won’t work (neither will Safari).

It’s untethered jailbreak iOS 5.1 for iPhone 3GS (old bootrom) users.

UltraSn0w unlockers MUST use RedSn0w to create Custom IPSW. and then restore using that custom firmware. AVOID STOCK FIRMWARE. UltraSn0w will be updated with iOS 5.1 support in a couple of days (no new baseband support)

we realize that some of you non-A5 jailbreakers are itching to get to 5.1, even though there seems to be no compelling new feature there. Because of geohot’s limera1n exploit, those with devices earlier than the iPad 2 can test the 5.1 jailbreak waters if they really want to, using redsn0w 0.9.10b6.  Here’s what you need to know:

  • This is a *tethered* 5.1 jailbreak for non-A5 devices.  You’ll need to use redsn0w to “Just Boot” your device every time it power cycles, otherwise jailbreak apps won’t work (neither will Safari).
  • If you use ultrasn0w for your carrier unlock, be sure to use a custom IPSW to get to 5.1 first!  Don’t ever restore to a stock Apple IPSW!  Use redsn0w’s “Custom IPSW” button to create a NO_BB_* version of the 5.1 IPSW and restore to that instead of the stock one.  (That option is available only to 3GS and iPhone4-GSM owners.)  ultrasn0w itself will be updated for 5.1 in the next few days (same baseband support, not 5.1’s baseband).
  • If you’re lucky enough to have an old-bootrom 3GS, this jailbreak is actually untethered (redsn0w will figure that part out automatically).
  • While we were at it, we added @pod2g’s steaks4uce exploit to support MC models of the iPod touch 2G (whose last firmware was 4.2.1).  So now redsn0w will auto-detect and jailbreak both MB and MC versions of that older device.
  • iBooks won’t work until a future update of redsn0w

Apple Released iOS 5.1 For iPhone, iPad And iPod Touch [Direct Links]

Apple released iOS 5.1 alongside the new iPad 3 and new Apple TV. The update brings a variety of new features and bug fixes to iOS including the ability to delete images from Photo Stream, camera shortcut visible by default on lock screen, improved camera face detection, Japanese language support for Siri, genius mixes for iTunes Match, updated AT&T network indicator, improved battery life, and more.

You can get the iOS 5.1 software update directly on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch by using OTA Update, or you can update through iTunes or by downloading the IPSW and performing a manual upgrade.

Spire – Free and Legal Siri Port for all iOS 5 Devices Released

A trio of iOS developers: Grant Paul (Chpwn), Ryan Petrich, and Steven Troughton-Smith have recently released a new Siri port called Spire. This port mirrors all the iPhone 4S Siri functionality and works on the following iDevices: iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G, and iPad (first generation).

According to a blog post from Chpwn, Spire comes in at around 100mb and the developers recommend connecting to a Wi-Fi network for downloading, not a standard cellular network because of its large file size. As of right now, there have been a few Siri ports which have gone public through Cydia but they were all deemed to be unsafe and illegal by the development community. This was a result of these ports distributing Apple copyrighted materials. According to Chpwn, “Spire uses a new method to obtain the files necessary for Siri, so it doesn’t have the copyright issues encountered by previous attempts.”

There still is a big caveat though – you still have to gain authorization through your own server and an iPhone 4S. Chpwn took the time to explain the caveat with a bit more detail:

However, Spire is not a complete solution. Apple still requires authorization to use Siri, so information from an iPhone 4S is still required. To insert this information, Spire allows you to enter your own proxy server address. By using this (ancient) SiriProxy fork, you can setup a proxy using your own iPhone 4S to insert the needed information reasonably easily. Other solutions for proxying Siri will be listed here as they are developed — perhaps that sort of proxy might be included in the main SiriProxy repository.

As of right now, Spire has been deemed to be the best Siri port to use until the iPhone 4S jailbreak is publicly released. According to Steven Troughton-Smith, “when the iPhone 4S is jailbroken, then we can avoid the proxy server issues. iFaith 1.4 Released – Downgrade From iOS 5.0.1 to iOS 5.0 (Requires iOS 5.0 APticket)

First and foremost, for those of you who are on iOS 5.0.1 already, you are out of luck. Now those of you who are still on iOS 5.0, you can now save not only your SHSH blobs but also your APtickets, which are used in Apple’s new firmware verification process. What exactly does this mean? It means that if you are on iOS 5.0 right now, and for some reason you need to restore (it updates to iOS 5.0.1) then you can have the option to downgrade back to iOS 5.0 granted you have used iFaith to save your APticket before you restored.

It should be noted that if you are on iOS 5.0.1 already, you CANNOT downgrade to iOS 5.0.

This is mainly for people who have saved their APtickets on iOS 5.0 as they will be the only ones who can downgrade back from iOS 5.0.1 to iOS 5.0.

Detailed Information

An APticket is a piece of information, almost like a screenshot. When you use Apple’s iOS 5.0 firmware, your device has an APticket saved for iOS 5.0. When you update to iOS 5.0.1, our APticket changes to an iOS 5.0.1 APticket. This is how Apple keeps you from downgrading.

By using iFaith, you can not only save your SHSH blobs, but also your current iOS 5.0 APticket. This allows you to use the APticket you had for iOS 5.0 to downgrade back to iOS 5.0 from iOS 5.0.1 since your iOS 5.0 APticket is still valid. Now if you don’t save your APticket when you are on iOS 5.0, ten your new APticket is the one given to you by iOS 5.0.1, which means that you don’t have an APticket for iOS 5.0. Since you don’t have one, you cannot downgrade back to iOS 5.0 from iOS 5.0.1. In this case, iOS 5.0.1 would be the lowest you could go.

Currently, iFaith only supports Windows, as iH8sn0w is a Windows user himself. He is also the famous developer behind Sn0wbreeze, which is the Windows-only jailbreak tool. At this point in time, there isn’t any information regarding a Mac version and its release.

We recommend dumping your SHSH and APtickets if you’re on iOS 5.0. It will give you the option to downgrade back to iOS 5.0 anytime after you have used the software utility.

Bypass Jailbreak Detection Found in Apps With xCon

Since Apple introduced an API in iOS that detects jailbroken iOS devices, developers have been using it to prevent users who have jailbroken their iOS devices, developers have been using it to prevent users who have jailbroken their iOS devices from using their apps. Typically these users are greeted with the following error message: “Jailbreak detected. App cannot run on a jailbroken device” when they launch such apps.

The jailbreak detection has been found in apps such as Bloomberg Anywhere, Cablevision, Cisco M-Learning, DirecTV for iPad, Grimm’s Fairy Tales, Time Warner Cable, Verizon On Demand /FlexView etc. Cable companies such as Cablevision and Time Warner that allow their apps to be used only over home Wi-Fi network are paranoid that users who have jailbroken their iOS device could use their jailbreak tweaks such as My3G that enable 3G for “Wi-Fi Only” apps and use their apps while on the go. This is what has lead them to have taken the extreme step of preventing jailbroken iOS device users from using their apps.

This is going to be harder though since the iOS hacker, n00neimp0rtant recently created a jailbreak tweak called xCon which bypasses jailbreak detection in apps. It allows you to use the apps that currently prevent jailbroken iOS device users from using. The tweak apparently works by sandboxing the apps into its own memory space allowing you to use them without a jailbreak being detected.

TinyUmbrella v5.01.00 Released – Save iOS 5.0.1 SHSH Blobs

Even for those of you who aren’t jailbreakers,  TinyUmbrella is a great little app that allows you to save your iPhone, iPod touch or iPads SHSH blob files locally. Some of you may be wondering what SHSH blobs are and what the purpose of saving them might be. It is quite simple, if you have your blob files stored locally, you can downgrade your iDevice to an earlier version of iOS; useful if your iPhone gets hit with a bug in the latest version of iOS, or an app you can’t live without stops working.

If you are running iOS 5.0.1, you might want to head on by TinyUmbrella’s official website and grab the latest version: it’s been updated to save the latest version’s SHSH blob files. @notcom (the developer of Tiny Umbrella) did mention one caveat though: Even though you can store an iPhone 4S’s blob files locally with the new version of Tiny Umbrella, there’s no known way to restore them – so don’t expect to be downgrading your iPhone 4S anytime soon.

Even though there is still no working solution for restoring 5.x on iPhone 4S I have released a 5.01.00 so you can at least save 5.0.1 SHSH. I have added tentative support for at least saving 5.0.1 SHSHs for iPhone 4S but as of now we are unable to use them fully. As soon as more information is available I will update.

Still, we recommend saving them as they might come in handy in the future and they only take a few seconds to save!

For those of you who are not on an iPhone 4S and managed to save your iOS 5.0 SHSH blob, you can downgrade from iOS 5.0.1 to iOS 5.0. To do so, follow the steps here.
